Tom Hanks’ son fights intruder in attempted burglary
Tom Hanks’ son, Chet Hanks, was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with a man who attempted to break into his home last Friday.
Chet, 33, was woken up by an intruder in his Los Angeles residence at 3 AM local time. The two then engaged in a physical struggle as Chet attempted to subdue the suspect. Los Angeles County Sheriff officers arrived at the site not long after.
The situation escalated when the 42-year-old suspect resisted arrest, leading to a struggle with the deputies. During the incident, the suspect fell onto a deputy, causing a broken leg. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Chet emerged from the incident uninjured.
Upon medical clearance, the suspect was charged with burglary. His case will be forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges.
“In the commission of the burglary, Victim Hanks had to defend himself against the suspect and was able to subdue him until department personnel arrived on scene. The suspect was handcuffed and arrested at the location,” read a statement from the police to entertainment news outlet TMZ.
“After the suspect’s treatment, he was transported and booked at Marina Del Rey Station for burglary and other violations are still being investigated.”
Other high-profile burglary victims
Last month, Hollyoaks and Dancing on Ice star Jorgie Porter also revealed that burglars had tried to break into her Cheshire home, which she shares with her fiancé Oliver and their infant son, Forest. Following police counsel that it might aid in identifying the perpetrators, she posted CCTV footage of the attempted robbery on her social media.
“They came over the gate. Obviously it’s been planned because all the cables have been cut,” she said. “The Wi-Fi has been cut in the area. Our alarm was taken off the wall. They’ve really planned it.”
In February, Love Island star Davide Sanclimenti shared on social media that he had foiled an attempted break-in at his residence while he was in the Maldives with his girlfriend, Ekin-Su. Sanclimenti claimed that a group of unidentified men had pretended to be maintenance workers to access the building he lives in before attempting to enter his apartment.
“We did not expect no maintenance when we are in Maldives!” wrote the Italian businessman.
Burglary among top risks to HNWIs
According to a 2022 study by Ecclesiastical, a specialist insurer, burglary and theft are among the top risks to high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and celebrities at 20 percent.
HNWIs and celebrities are often targeted by criminals due to their wealth and the valuable assets they possess, such as their properties, jewellery, cash, or sensitive information.
Their public profiles and media exposure can also inadvertently provide information about their residences, travel plans, and personal routines. This information can be exploited by criminals to plan and execute burglaries with a higher chance of success.
HNWIs can implement comprehensive security systems to mitigate the risk, including alarms, surveillance cameras, and access control measures.
They can enhance the security of their residences with high-quality locks, reinforced doors and windows, and secure perimeter fencing, as well as hiring security companies like Marengo to provide comprehensive security plans tailored for their residences.
