Four men are facing murder charges in the death of 17-year-old Simarjeet Singh Nangpal. The teenager, who resided near the crime scene, was a victim of a fatal stabbing in a suspected altercation with the suspects in Southall, West London.

Despite paramedics’ efforts, Nangpal eventually succumbed to his knife wounds and passed away at the scene. The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 15, and homicide detectives immediately took action to officially charge the suspects in West London.

The suspects are 21-year-old Amandeep Singh, 27-year-old Manjit Singh and 31-year-old Ajmeer Singh. All three are also residents of Southall and will face charges at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, as announced by the Metropolitan Police. 

Overnight, 71-year-old Poran Singh, also from Southall, was additionally charged with murder. He is set to appear at the same court on the same day.

A local witness recounted the brutal attack on Nangpal after the incident, describing how two groups clashed in the street, resulting in severe beating and stabbing. The witness, who preferred not to disclose their name, actively intervened at one point. They urged the group to cease the violence with the warning, “You are going to kill him.” 

According to the witness, the chaotic scene unfolded when individuals in a car arrived and initiated a fight with people on the street, causing screaming and chaos. The altercation took place outside a residence on Burket Close, creating utter mayhem.

Another neighbour shared details of the incident. They mentioned that the victim’s mother was present and how her screaming at the time was “heartbreaking to see.”

“Our thoughts remain with Simarjeet’s family at this extremely difficult time,” Detective Superintendent Figo Forouzan said. “No family should have to go through what they are experiencing.”

Forouzan added that additional officers would patrol the area in the following days of the incident. He also encouraged residents to discuss their concerns with the officers.

Second-highest rate of homicide

A similar incident also happened to a 15-year-old girl in south London’s Croydon last September. The girl, en route to school, suffered a fatal stab to the neck with a foot-long knife. 

Shortly after the incident, law enforcement arrested a 17-year-old boy suspected of having an acquaintance with the victim. This incident represented the 15th teenage homicide this year, following 14 recorded in the previous year.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) provided a report on teenage homicides in the UK in the early half of 2022. According to the ONS report, individuals aged 16 to 24 years had the second-highest rate of homicide, standing at 19 per million population. 

This number was only closely behind the homicides of children under one-year-old, with the highest rate at 29 per million population. The same report also revealed that using a sharp instrument was the most prevalent method of such offences.

The recent number of teenage homicides and violence has increased numerous parents’ concern for their children’s safety. As such, starting actions toward preventing similar cases becomes key, which demands a strategy involving every parent, community member, and law enforcement. 

Community engagement becomes extremely crucial in the process of fostering connections and providing support to young people. Implementing mentorship programs, organising after-school activities, and offering job opportunities can prevent them from engaging in gangs or violent behaviours.

Collaboration with law enforcement is also crucial.
