A man in his twenties was hospitalised on Friday, September 15, following a reported kidnapping in Abingdon. The incident occurred around 02.50 a.m. and prompted a police investigation.

Another recent kidnapping case happened on Valentine Street in Failsworth, Oldham, at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, August 13. Detectives reported that a man emerged from the vehicle’s front passenger seat, forcibly pulled the woman inside, and then fled the scene.

Concerns regarding rising kidnapping rate

According to Statista, police in England and Wales documented 7,420 kidnapping offences during the 2022/23 period, marking an uptick from the previous year. Kidnapping cases hit a low point at 1,388 offences in 2012/13 but have consistently risen in almost every following year of reporting.

Kidnapping incidents surged amid a broader rise in crime across the United Kingdom. While overall crime declined from 2003/04 to 2010/11, it experienced a sudden resurgence and peaked at an eleven-year high of 6.43 million offences in 2019/20.

The ongoing crime patterns in the UK raised concerns regarding the police’s capacity to combat them, including manpower and resource adequacy. The police also have to grapple with reduced funding and fewer officers, making law enforcement tasks more demanding.

Protecting yourself against kidnapping

Kidnapping is a pervasive concern nationwide. While anyone could theoretically be targeted, HNWs or high-profile individuals would be more likely to be targeted due to their wealth and potential to deliver greater ransoms.

Kidnappings are typically orchestrated by seasoned criminals and executed by experts,  whose teams are likely to be armed. .

Understanding how to address this issue is crucial. As an HNWI, you can guard yourself by hiring a personal security team, which typically includes bodyguards, drivers, and security consultants trained to mitigate risks.
